It is made from sheep's wool by a fair trade cooperative of artesanias in Chinchero outside the city of Cusco. The textile is colored only with natural dyes from plants. Each color is from a specific plant in Peru. For example, the green comes from the chilca plant. The purple comes from purple corn or maiz. It is complimented by an intricately "eye" patterned edging or trim, which the Chinchero weavers are
